Plans for a major new cycle route running from Darlington to Blyth have been unveiled.

The Great North Cycleway will run through Durham, Gateshead and Newcastle going past the Angel of the North and across the Tyne Bridge.

The cycleway will also take in more scenic river routes, as well as town centre streets.

Parts of the route have already been decided, but councils want to hear local views on the proposals.

The scheme is being supported by all local councils, as well as Sustrans, the charity which promotes walking and cycling.

A spokesman for Newcastle Council said: “Although the route will be important for cycling commuters, it may not be as direct as a route chosen by more experienced cyclists.

“We are aiming for it to be of a similar standard to existing national cycle routes which means that it can be used by a family with young children, a sensible 12-year-old or a novice adult.”

The project will take two years to complete.
